Aloha! A Few Questions From HI

Aloha,

Am interested in getting into a two year old sports coupe and after a few searches, the Infiniti RS4 seems to check several of the right boxes. I owned a 911 several years back and kept my SUV but as a single guy, two cars is pretty much a PITA and also expensive here and owning just one car makes more sense. I would have to buy and ship from the Mainland and need to do more research, but a few questions if anyone can make the time to answer...I'd appreciate it (I did use the "Search" function first...apologies if I missed answers to my questions).

-The slate gray color appeals to me as it has a hint of blue in many of the photos on Car Gurus. Is the blue only evident in the sunlight?
-Is the Infiniti exhaust upgreade (Part B0100-Q60S2) still available? The exhaust upgrade has a nice sound and I would hope that given it is an Infiniti part, installation would not void a warranty issue.
-It's tough to get a super close up of the driver's door handle. I do a lot of ocean swimming and body boarding am used to carrying a key (just to open the door) in my swim trunks. Is that doable with the Q60? Or is the fob the only way to get the door open?
-It appears the trunk opens into the rear seat area and the back seats do fold down.

I'm sure these might be unusual questions. Am getting to the Mainland a few times this spring/summer and hope to take a few test drives. Mahalo, David

Welcome!! Definitely get one if you’re looking for a coupe you won’t regret it!! Great mix of sports and luxury!!

  • I personally have midnight Black but I’ve seen a slate grey at my local dealer and it’s a very unique/crazy color! Definitely has a grayish appearance at night/evening hours but I’d say overall it has more of a bluish hue to it in any sort of light.
  • Exhaust you’re referring to is the Infiniti Hemholtz Resonated Sport Exhaust. That’s what I have on mine and I Love it!! Sounds nice on hard pulls & cold starts but pretty mellow at cruising speeds and no drone. Stock exhaust on this car absolutely sucks and is Waaaaay too quiet. And you’re correct this would not void warranty. Don’t quote me but I’m pretty sure no exhaust would affect the warranty.
  • Fob does have a physical key you can pull out of it and drivers handle has a keyhole. You can use this to open the door incase of a dead battery also to roll your windows back up. Although it sounds like you want to take the physical key in your bathing suit with you and leave the key fob in the car well you’re swimming and I’m not sure the car would allow you to lock the doors with the fob left in there as a safety feature so that would be something to try out when you go look at one on the mainland.
  • Back seats do fold down into the trunk although it still not very big or long of an area. I could just barely fit a hockey stick and it came all the way up through the middle of the front seats to where the shifter is located. Not sure how big a body board is but I can tell you there’s definitely Nooo way you’ll ever fit a surf board in there haha.

Aloha BIGTRIFI,

Thanks for all of the good points. The slate gray does seem to have a bluish hue...which I like but will not really know until I get to the Mainland and see a few. There is one currently for sale in Roseville, CA.

There is a ton of back and forth on exhaust mods and warranty but I agree...the stock exhaust appears a bit mellow from the Youtube videos. With a NA V8, I'd like a little more growl. I did a fair amount of reading on the Lexus RC F as well and though there was quite a bit of back and forth, ultimately, it seemed like most owners were SOL if they installed an after market exhaust that created exhaust related errors and problems (under warranty). So...it would be important to discuss that with an Infiniti shop RE: the Infiniti Hemholtz Resonated Sport Exhaust. One thing nice about the 911 was that Porsche did offer a factory exhaust upgrade (PSE).

If a duplicate of the physical key can be cut by a locksmith (normally possible as long as the physical key doesn't have a chip), that would work. More to look into.

A body board is rather small and should fit on the backseats when they are down but a surfboard is probably out of the question without roof racks...which I would never get since they pretty much ruin the lines of the car. I have a couple of ideas to work around the surfboard thing.

Anyway, lots to consider and living in HI does not make it easier. Thanks again.

The slate gray definitely has a bluish bluish hue. I actually liked it a lot when I finally saw it in person but overall I prefer black cars so that’s what I went with. All personal preference, when you see it in person you’ll know.

If you’re referring to Infiniti specifically I haven’t heard much back and forth at all on exhaust mods and warranty work. Especially not for the licensed branded exhausts they offer. If it’s a Infiniti part you shouldn’t have any issues. Stock exhaust is worse than mellow on these, it’s a **** whisper haha. A ton of people said these should have came factory with the sport exhaust, at least for the Red Sports, and I couldn’t agree more. Also these are TT V6, not NA V8, not sure if you were aware or referring to the Lexus. The RCF is Beautiful!! My neighbor has an orange one, definitely a head turner.

I don’t believe the physical key has a chip in it as there’s no way to start the car with the physical key, you can only use it on the handle so locksmith should be able to copy for you without issue but you still might have an issue with leaving the actual fob in the car and being able to lock it.

Oh yeah sounds like you’d be fine with a small body board then. 1000% no surfboard in there I’m telling you that right now haha .

Definitely must be difficult for vehicle related stuff living in HI but Sh*t at least you have that great weather!! I’m in NY 26° and snowy this evening.

You’re welcome, Anytime!!

That would be fine. Perfect it will also lock the door with the fob inside the car...need to read up on that.

Agree on color...need to see in person. I've owned two black sports cars in the past and they are certainly beautiful when clean and waxed. One just has to realize it is almost a part time job keeping them that way but no worries with a few cold ones and some music.

I do hope the licensed muffler is still available...the extra growl is pretty much a must have. I emailed an Infiniti dealer in Roseville, CA with 4 questions about a 2020 slate gray RS they have on the lot at $48.5k. The car is CPO with only 9,300 miles but has been on the lot for 120 days with a price drop of $5k. Could be a red flag but have yet to recieve a reply. I'll likely call the sales manager if I don't hear back. Interestingly enough...several of the 2020 RS's have been on the lot for 60 days or more and with price drops...could be lots of reasons why.

I did look at the RCF and like that car too. Good looking car and sounds nice...would sound even nicer if it had the LC 500 exhaust set-up. But a 2020 RS all in if I can get one shipped from CA will be about $55k and where I want to be price wise.

I'm originally from the East coast so I know about the winters. Weather here is obviously nice and if you like the ocean...even better. But the car selection, especially in the used market, is rather weak and the dealers here have more leverage given there is normally one dealer per brand.

Perfect it will also lock the door with the fob inside the car
I've never tried that however, there's a button on the exterior door handle that locks and unlocks the door when you have the fob. If the fob is inside the car, it may allow a stranger to use that same button to unlock the car. You'll have to test it.

If the fob battery is dead:
INTELLIGENT KEY BATTERY DISCHARGE
If the battery of the Intelligent Key is
discharged, or environmental conditions
interfere with the Intelligent Key operation,
start the engine according to the following
procedure:
1. Move the shift lever to the P (Park)
position.
2. Firmly apply the foot brake.
3. Touch the ignition switch with the
Intelligent Key as illustrated. (A chime
will sound.)
4. Push the ignition switch while depressing the brake pedal within 10 seconds
after the chime sounds. The engine will
start.

If your car won't allow you to lock it with the fob inside, or if the external lock/unlock button is active with the fob inside, you might try removing the fob battery. However, even if the fob battery is dead, it still might need to be inside the fob to complete the circuit for the described dead fob battery start procedure. You'll just have to test it.

It gets angry when you try to lock a fob inside, there may be a way to do it but I was unable to figure it out. I remember that folding seats is an option, not all cars have it, so I'd verify that the one you're looking at has that option. As for exhaust, any axleback will never void a warranty, it's just a cosmetic change. You really don't have to think about it with exhausts until you're changing downpipes, and even that's a stretch warranty wise.
I've seen comments in forum regarding leaving your fully charged fob in the trunk area and locking the vehicle and being stuck!

Might be a year to year change too, my 21 I think would pop the trunk back open when you tried to close it.

Every MY is supposed to pop the trunk with the fob inside, but the car doesn't always sense it.

Thanks for the heads up on the rear seats.
I doubt the engineers at Nissan were that concerned with an extremely small percentage of buyers who would see a plus in being able to lock the fob in the car and still open the door with a duplicate of the physical key...it is not a need for most buyers and something I'd just have to figure out a work around for. A lot of surfers, ocean swimmers, etc. will lock their car fob or key in a little lockbox (like the ones realtors use on homes for sale) and tuck it under their bumper. Unfortunately, I've seen those stolen in some areas.
The exhaust/warranty conversation would be important and something to discuss with a service manager just to make sure we were on the same page regarding exhaust upgrades. But...first things first. Need to get the dealership on the line about the car then see one in person to see if it looks as good in person as it does on a PC screen.

How's the Ford presence out there? They door keypad is incredibly useful for things like camping or beach trips, I used it a lot on my SHO.
