Aloha! A Few Questions From HI

Aloha,

Am interested in getting into a two year old sports coupe and after a few searches, the Infiniti RS4 seems to check several of the right boxes. I owned a 911 several years back and kept my SUV but as a single guy, two cars is pretty much a PITA and also expensive here and owning just one car makes more sense. I would have to buy and ship from the Mainland and need to do more research, but a few questions if anyone can make the time to answer...I'd appreciate it (I did use the "Search" function first...apologies if I missed answers to my questions).

-The slate gray color appeals to me as it has a hint of blue in many of the photos on Car Gurus. Is the blue only evident in the sunlight?
-Is the Infiniti exhaust upgreade (Part B0100-Q60S2) still available? The exhaust upgrade has a nice sound and I would hope that given it is an Infiniti part, installation would not void a warranty issue.
-It's tough to get a super close up of the driver's door handle. I do a lot of ocean swimming and body boarding am used to carrying a key (just to open the door) in my swim trunks. Is that doable with the Q60? Or is the fob the only way to get the door open?
-It appears the trunk opens into the rear seat area and the back seats do fold down.

I'm sure these might be unusual questions. Am getting to the Mainland a few times this spring/summer and hope to take a few test drives. Mahalo, David

I’ve been trying to think of a solution for you for locking the fob in the car. I tried to do it to my car the other day with the physical key taken out of it, but it still wouldn’t let me lock it. It just kept beeping at me, but I was thinking what about a faraday bag?? They make ones specifically for key fobs that are supposed to block the signal going out so car thieves can’t use computers or scanners or whatever the heck they used to steal your fob signal, thus stealing your car remotely. I bet you that would work!! You can get a decent one on Amazon for $10-$20

Oh ****, that's probably the answer. I actually have a Faraday box I keep my keys in at night.
Ford is one car brand that does have multiple dealerships here...3 in fact. And I've done business with one of the Ford dealership's GM...who tried to lure me into taking a look at the new Bronco. Funny...because I had the same thought about some of their vehicle having the keypad. Not sure if the Mustang V-8 models have that feature but that car doesn't look half bad and sounds nice too. But...."Mustang" is the preferred rental car here and even one of the nicer models would sort of blend in. The new Volvo models have a pretty sweet remote start/unlock option using the Apple Watch which would be convenient too.

Faraday bag...interesting. Did a quick "Google" search but need to read more. It does sound like a solid idea.
Faraday bag
Yup, law enforcement frequently use them to store phones and other electronic devices retrieved at crime scenes to preserve data and keep them from being wiped remotely. The bags and boxes block the transmissions and receptions of the device.

Take the key out of the FOB. Put the FOB wherever you want in the car. Use the physical key and lock the door. Problem solved. I just tried it. Works fine.

And pushing the lock/unlock button on the exterior door handle with the fob inside won't operate the lock?

No. Pushing the button gives the same multi-beeping sound it normally gives when you try and lock the door when your FOB is still in the car. You know, that 'hey dummy, your keys are in the car' sound.:)

-Is the Infiniti exhaust upgreade (Part B0100-Q60S2) still available?
Any of the parts listed here are available through Infiniti of Honolulu for order, with no shipping charge. It's best to assume they carry nothing in stock.
I'm not sure if they will honor warranty of a Q60 not purchased at their dealership though.
DM me if you want the Parts Manager's email. (He's nice, mechanics are bleh.)

Or is the fob the only way to get the door open?
While you do need a subscription, you can install a Virtual Key (Lexus calls it Digital Key) to use your smartphone instead of your keyfob.
Some however say it replaces your keyfobs, so I'm not sure if you can have both.
But it means you have to use the app to unlock... so maybe touchless keyfob is enough. (By default, with the key in your pocket, you can slide your hand into the door handle and it'll unlock.)

back seats do fold down.
They do, but you can't split them. You also have to pull a tag from the trunk, then go back into the cabin and pull the seats down. I estimate it would fit a shortboard without touching the front seats.

Also, since I've been a busybody anyway... quick buyers guide.
Infiniti of Honolulu will not take new orders of the Q60 (because it's discontinued, as you know).
This has been sitting on their lot for over a year now, as far as I can remember. Maybe you can get a deal, but you would have to be aggressive.
Total price shipping your Q60 from the mainland would probably be better than buying here.

Avoid 2017 model. (Anything older is actually an G37 in disguise. Blame Ghosn.)

Apple Carplay was only introduced in 2020, so make sure you get a 2020 or newer if its important to you. Aftermarket infortainment solutions are Android based, so they do Android well, but not Apple Carplay, according to the reviews. YMMV.

Everyone hates DAS (Directive Adaptive Steering) but a scant few who properly see the Q60 as a GT car. Try to see if your trim has the Proactive package = DAS. Some say the newer models have a better implementation, so its best that you test it yourself. (All the Q60 option packages are a bit funky, so its like they want you to get all of them by sprinkling key features into each.)

DDS (Dynamic Digital Suspension) is only available on the RS but it means your coilovers options become limited. It might not be worth just to go for the RS for DDS.
Probably better to get higher sidewall tires and smaller wheels (RS comes with 20"s while the others come with 19"s) to mitigate all the potholes than DDS.
The RS is prehaps better if you want to do a light tune or keep it stock. A tuned and modded lower trim would be no different than the RS.

AWD is generally considered the better option, scarce or not available in the warmer states. (It's as heavy as a RC F... definitely not a nimble car that can take advantage of RWD, at least fully stock.) You certainly have more coilover options for AWD than RWD. For example, AWD coilovers w/DDS are $1,200~1,400, but for RWD, the only option (that is in stock) are RS-R's $3,000 ones. The RWD does sit a little lower than the AWD so take a look at both if you plan to keep it stock.

The RWD verus the AWD has less weight with better balance or distribution. Better turning ratio and it sits lower the AWD. I like the standard wheels better. I have 2017 RS and love it
