300 v 400

The 400-hp 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine is the same as the 300-hp unit in the mid-level Q60, but Infiniti keeps the wastegate shut a little longer, upping peak boost from 0.65 bar in the mid-level Q to 1.0 bar in our 400-hp Red Sport. To do that required better oil cooling and a very precise turbo speed sensor. The sensor is described in Infiniti literature as “optical,” but Mineke Iwaki, manager for vehicle dynamics engineering, said it actually measures fluctuations in the magnetic charge emitted as the turbo spins, which sounds far more sciencey to us.

By knowing the exact speed of each of the two turbos, engineers are able to get closer to the engine’s maximum load capacity, increasing boost to nearer the limit without fear of blowing the whole thing up like an M80 in a cantaloupe.

The turbos themselves are integrated into the headers, which are integrated into the cylinder head for greater efficiency, offering a shorter flow to the catalytic converters and greater rigidity.

I can't find performance stats anywhere online for the 3.0t, only the Red Sport.

Anyone know or have an estimate of the 0-60 & 1/4 mile times for the 3.0t?

And what exactly are the differences between the two that prevent the mid-range model from putting out 400 hp? I thought they shared the same engine. Would a tuner be able to get the 3.0t closer to it's big brother's numbers?

SpeedyQ, I haven't seen the numbers either since it looks like Infiniti has been pushing the RS version more than the others (heck has anyone seen a review on the 2.0T?), but I believe it is possible to tune the mid-range 3.0T up to the RS 3.0T. Despite the very limited differences, it's mostly about pushing more boost.

There are already mid-range 3.0T Q50s running RS levels of power and higher. So you should be fine. The VR engine series is pretty robust...not sure how the direct injection will stack up over time though.
I'm not so sure this is accurate. It's my understanding that the turbos are much larger on the RS, and the cooling system for them far more advanced. I'm sure with a change of the exhaust and a tune you can get close, but you'll be pushing it to its limit.
The turbo are the same from the RS and non RS

My non RS is getting lower down pipes installed with qtp cutouts at the moment. On the 20th I will be getting my car tuned for 19 psi ( 500-520rwhp) which is pretty much max for these tiny turbos.

Performance aside, the RS400 has a much upgraded interior w/ semi-aniline leather. That's what sold my wife, the performance sold me.

I won't tune an in-warranty vehicle either. People always talk about the ability to return them to stock, and while it's true that any ECM can be flashed back to stock just as the tune was flashed, the fingerprints of the tune are still there and can always be found.

If you lease and tune, you could get hit w/ a very big bill if they find the tune after you turn it in. You're rolling the dice.

Good catch on the exhaust tips....I thought the calipers on the "silver sport" version were also upgraded to the Akebonos that the red sport gets. Do they really keep the regular brake setup?
The brakes on the Silver are exactly the same as the Red, just painted silver.

I have a non-DAS Q50 Red Sport. My car was in the shop yesterday and I receive a 2017 Q50 3.0TT for a loaner. I was surprised how fast the 3.0TT was. In real world driving, I'm not sure I could tell a huge difference between that car and the RS. I was very impressed with how quick it was. Also, maybe just in my head, but it seemed to shift quicker than my RS but it may just be that the shift points were earlier. Finally, the steering feel on the 2017 was better than my 2018 RS. Did they switch from Hydraulic to Electric perhaps?

I believe the 2.0t are the only editions to come with hydraulic. On 2017 and 2018, the 3.0tt only come with either DAS or rack electric, depending on which package you have. I wonder if the difference was due to the type of tire? Did you notice what tires your loaner had on it?

I know there are a handful of differences, many have been listed here already. IMO the biggest ones are the tune applied and the cooling system. Cooling is key too as anyone can pump up boost but without the supporting modifications the stress on the entire packages is going to be pretty high. Might be great for the short term but anyone who has lived the life of boosting cars knows that long term it never shakes out well. IMO the RS is well worth the extra costs involved.
