So I've always noticed that when cold starting the Q it makes a fairly pronounced rattle/knock noise for the first 10-15 seconds then goes away. Anyone have any insight to what that is or have the same noise? I remember on the G37 similar cold start sounds but the Q's is soooo much more noticeable because after that initial 15 second window its absolutely gone and sounds wonderful. I've theorized that it's the timing chain but why would it make that rattling sound for 15 seconds then turn off like a switch. It's too clean of a stop in sound to be because of heat buildup, the cutoff sounds intentional almost.

Mine seems to surge when I'm on open highway too, mostly because my foot can't help but depress the gas pedal >

On the flatspotting idea I don't see how that would necessarily effect throttle, but I typically notice if I let the ride sit in the garage over the weekend I'll have a tiny bit of bumpy for about a half mile and then smooth sailing. When you feel that up and down motion is it more of a bounce then a jerk? What mode are you driving in?
It's not a problem. It's part of the cold start process. I believe it a function of the wastegate flapper.

I too have had this cold engine rattle since I purchased the car. The dealer has stated it's a known issue, so I've just let it be.
Has anyone switched oil to 5w-30 (Which is an option per the manual) and seen if this helps the noise? I'll be switching to 5W-30 being here in South Florida and am hoping perhaps this makes a difference?

I switched to 5W-30 but not for that reason. Does the rattle you're talking about disappear 30 seconds after start? I have the Sport Exhaust Kit without mufflers. It's loud AF for about 25 seconds during cold start, but I believe it's because the turbos are being bypassed at that time.
If that.... probably 15-20 seconds and it's gone after a cold start.
Yeah, that's just the normal start-up for this engine. It's not a sound due to any oil starvation.
Listen to the exhaust and watch the exhaust vapors in this clip. Note: This is another member's car that behaves identical to mine.

FWIW @brad126, mine does this as well. It could be due to a number of factors including how the exhaust gases are circulated at start-up or the injectors cycling due to the DI set-up. It's definitely normal and nothing to worry about.
After installing DP's and CBE, my baby is so loud at startup you can't even hear the rattle. PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
Glad to hear, cuz i took my car to Infiniti for the rattle and they said it was “normal” pissed me off. I wanted to punch the tech for thinking I’m stupid enough to believe the BS.
Looks like I’ll need to further upgrade the exhaust ( it’s a good problem to have ?[emoji23])

Yeah the first time I test drove a VR30 the sales guy cold started it and said something about it's a normal noise because of something the direct injection system is doing. Whether or not it actually is normal, they can't deny that it doesn't sound good. If I heard someone else's car start up like that I'd assume something was wrong, or at least poorly maintained.

Odd Turbo Noise
So I have a 2018 Q50 and ever since I put full lower and upper down pipes on i've noticed quite a bit more noise in the turbo's of course. This particular noise happens every cold start or starting it after its been sitting for 20 mins or so.. Its sounds ether like the waste gate on the turbo is rattling at low rpm or the turbo bearings arent lubed up or something.. I thought it was an exhaust leak or something but I dont lose boost pressure... and it goes away after the cars warmed up for like 20 mins of driving.. Comes back every time it sits or cold starts... :-?
Here is a google drive link to the sound ive recorded driving up a slight incline to create a small spool from low rpm..
Its a very odd sound and its only noticeable upon spooling very slowly from 1k to 2k rpm.. as well as deceleration/ spooling down, you can here some rattling..
